Saturday evenings are so much better after a victory!
This 3-0 victory over the league leaders, Lichfield City, was built on a solid defence combined with some fine attacking play. Particularly in the second half.
I must admit I was a bit worried when I was told we might have five players making their debut in this match. But it turned out to be two. The goalkeeper - Chris Brain and midfielder - Tom Dyke.
Lichfield nearly took the lead after a low cross from the left. But Mathew Burt managed to divert the ball back to Chris Brain. Copsewood moved the ball swiftly across from the left of the penalty area to Tom Dyke. His low shot flew just wide of the right hand post. Chances were few and far between. But as the linesman nearest me said. He couldn't tell who was top and who was bottom of the table. Lichfields goalie made a clearance which a diving Craig Civzelis attempted to volley back into an empty goal and nearly succeeded. Lichfield had a cross from the left. Which saw a glancing header just over the bar. But it was 0-0 at half time.
The second half started promisingly for Copsewood. Big Dave Akinuli won a free kick on the right and from the resulting free kick. He rose to back head the ball into the net. 1-0 and a huge boost to our confidence. Lichfield ressponded with a break down the left flank and a low cross across the face of goal. Which Stuart Adamson shepherded to safety. Big Dave then strode through and past three Lichfield defenders as if they weren't there and the ball across saw substitute:- Ross Wimbush stoop bravely to head the ball into the back of the net.
Lichfield had a free kick right on the edge of the penalty area. Chris Brain dived and held onto the ball amid the onrushing attackers. The Danny Fraser raced down the left edge of the penalty area and his low cross was coolly converted at the far post by Jack Downes.
Ross Wimbush had a long range effort well saved by James Fryer in the Lichfield goal.. George Whitelaw had to limp off near the end. As we had used our substitutes. We finished the match with ten men. But by then we were assured of the three points.
Next week we meet Bromsgrove Sporting at Allard Way. It was nice to see some more of our supporters at this game and we could do with you all and a few more next week.
